John Waller’s introspective photography begins by walking in the post-industrial landscape. These intuitive ambulations form the basis of a practice that oscillates between the poles of straight photography and in-studio experimentation. His thesis project Demesne looks at a planned industrial city whose history is inextricably linked to the river, textile production, and paper manufacturing. The photography is positioned to de-emphasize the cityscape and direct the gaze toward the element of water, its relationship to paper, and industrial artifacts.
